FAQs: Embalming

1. What is embalming?

2. Is embalming necessary?

Question #1What is embalming?
Answer:Embalming is the temporary disinfection, preservation, and restoration of the body. During the embalming process, the body is washed and dressed and cosmetics are applied.

Question #2Is embalming necessary?
Answer:Each funeral home establishes its own policy regarding the necessity of embalming as there is no federal or provincial ruling regarding this subject.
Our policy is that if there will be public viewing, we require embalming.  We especially recommend embalming if there is a long wait before burial or cremation.
Some religious traditions forbid embalming. Of course, this would be taken into consideration when making funeral arrangements.
If the body has to be transported outside of the province, or country, embalming is required by law.
